Steel du Jour...
Rattler. Recently I had the opportunity to rummage around an old homestead that dated to the first half of the 19th century. Among the keen junk I found was a wrought iron bolt. clearly hand-forged. True wrought iron is interesting stuff, has a very definite lengthwise grain, much like a stalk of celery. The grain is very evident in this bolt, and in places looks like deep fissures in the metal. It is about 3/4 inch in diameter and 12 inches long. Price: $75 plus shipping and insurance.
Wrought Iron Nail Pendant. More plunder from a 19th century homestead. Definitely wrought iron, this old square-head nail was split up the middle like a hickory sliver. It does not appear to be machine stamped, and probably dates to the early 1800's. The sterling silver ring is silver (no lead) soldered. An adjustable black leather thong is provided. Price: $50 plus postage and handling.
Pendant. Forged from mild steel, this pendant
has a brass inlay in the traditional weeping heart design. The weeping
heart was a frequent embellishment on 17th century Pennsylvania rifles
and tomahawks. Inlay is 5/8th inch; pendant is 3 1/2 inches. Comes with
a black leather neck cord.
Price: $75 plus shipping and insurance. ![]() Pendant. Hand-forged with a hammer-finish, from
