Welcome to Arcadia Forge. If you're a collector, or lover of fine knives, you've come to the right place. You may have noticed my business identity has changed from "Arcadian Forge," to "Arcadia Forge." Googling "Arcadian Forge" will get you a fragment of a webpage, nothing else. You came to the right place, please have a look around. If you discover you need a new custom knife, email or call. I'd love to hear from you.

What you need to know about Arcadia Forge Knives.

l. I make singular knives. Each knife is completed before the next one is started. Because materials always influence results, a knife often evolves in detail or character as I work with it.

2. My knives reflect the successful features of historical designs such as the puukko, skean dhu, and dirk, but never seek to mimic or copy.

3. I insist on quality you can see, and quality you can't. The excellence of fit and finish are obvious when you examine an Arcadia Forge knife; the excellence of materials may not be as evident. I use only select, thoroughly dried woods, time-tested carbon steels, and the strongest and most durable adhesives.

4. I forge my blades from high-carbon steel, and the primary bevels (the smooth, flat, surfaces that taper to the edge) are created without the use of power tools. Belt grinders are fast, but I can make a thinner, sharper, blade using hand files, abrasive hones, and silicon carbide sheet abrasive. The quality of the finished blade, and customer satisfaction, justifies the additional work time.

5. Almost without exception, domestic knifemakers polish their blades and provide a simple pouch sheath. I happen to think texture in metal adds an interesting dimension to the finished knife. Therefore, I buff my blades to a matte finish, and leave the hammer marks on the ricasso and above the grindline. I think the forge finish conveys something of what the metal goes through in the forging process. As to sheaths, I consider them an art form just as much as the knife itself. After the leather is cut to shape, it is thinned and beveled along the edge to create a strong seam that is pleasing to the eye. Each sheath is hand-stitched with a double-needle technique, wet-formed to the knife, and hand-buffed many times. Most sheaths are pauted--that is, embossed in the scandinavian manner by pushing a design into the leather while it is still wet.

A word about my customers.

I sell mostly to collectors who recognize the value of a well-made, unduplicated knife, and appreciate flawless fit and finish. I also sell to hunters and outdoorsmen who want something special and don't mind having their equipment noticed and admired. For a knife built to a customer's specifications, prices start at $300 for an unembellished knife and sheath.

Availability.

Typical delivery time for a knife built to a customer's specifications is 2 - 3 weeks; longer if detail work and embellishment are requested.

Some Particulars...

Handles and Furniture. Unless a knife
will see heavy duty, I recommend a fine wood handle. African Blackwood, Purple Heart, English Brown Oak, White Oak, Osage Orange, Birch, Hackberry, Bigleaf Maple, Amboyna Burl, Thuya Burl, Rosewood, Manzanita, Desert Ironwood, Flame Grain Black Walnut, and Bird's Eye Maple are presently in stock. . I weatherproof my wood handles with an extended soak in marine teak oil, then 4-6 hand rubbed coats of proprietary sealer. Alternatives to wood include White Tail Antler, Stag, and Oosic. For an extremely durable handle, stabilized wood is recommended.

Sheaths. Puukko are supplied with a tuppi, the traditional Nordic sheath wet-formed to the knife .On request, a sheath can be pauted (pauting is the Nordic technique of pushing the leather into decorative shapes while it is wet.) Every sheath is made from top-grain leather, and hand-stitched using an awl and the double needle technique.
